Abu Dhabi has formalised its push into advanced air mobility with a cooperation agreement signed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility). The agreement, signed under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, is focused on design certification, manufacturing standards and regulatory frameworks for emerging aircraft technologies, including electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and electric conventional take-off and landing (eCTOL) systems.
A concrete output of the partnership will be the development of State of Design and State of Manufacture documentation — the foundational regulatory instruments that typically allow a jurisdiction to certify and oversee aircraft types independently. The Al Ain Region has been designated as the primary location for these design and regulatory activities, with supporting infrastructure, technical expertise and international partnerships to be built out there.
